Surgical time-out is a period of time in which all members of the surgical team are actively involved and participate in positively identifying the patient for whom the surgical procedure is intended and the visibility of the marked site of the procedure. It is mandatory that all staff members involved in the procedure participate in the time-out to avoid errors. During this period, effective communication is paramount in ensuring that all errors are avoided and the procedure is carried out as intended.

Communication failure among perioperative team members can threaten the effectiveness of a surgical time-out and leave room for errors regarding patient safety.
