Trait Incompleteness, a likely motivator for obsessive-compulsive behaviour, is a form of perfectionism characterized by high personal standards for things being "just right" and a frequent sense of internal dissatisfaction that they're not. Previous research shows individuals high in trait incompleteness to have heightened attunement to visual symmetry. The present study investigated the link between trait incompleteness (INC) and heightened attunement to symmetry in sound (i.e., sameness, balance, and regularity). High (n = 39) and low (n = 39) INC groups completed auditory symmetry preference and detection tasks. Across task results produced evidence for three main findings for incompleteness: 1) heightened sensory sensitivity and ability to detect differences in the SPT--Intervals, SPT--Melodies, and SDT--MBEA; 2) decisional slowing for ambiguous stimuli in the SPT--Excerpts and SPT--Melodies; and 3) global ability to perform irrespective of task parameters in the SDT--Sliding Tones. As in the visual realm, trait incompleteness is linked to increased attunement for auditory symmetry.
