This study focused on ethical uncertainty in the workplace following an economic downturn. Specifically, this study focused on the events that triggered workplace ethical uncertainty, motivations for reducing ethical uncertainty in the workplace, and communication tactics used to reduce ethical uncertainty in the workplace. It is found that three events triggering ethical uncertainty: potential job loss, under delivery, and a general lack of communication throughout the organization. It is also found that the primary motivations to manage ethical uncertainty were cognitive involvement, uncertainty and desire for control. Secondary motivations for reducing ethical uncertainty were also evaluated and the data revealed that identity goals, interaction goals, resource goals and arousal management were all secondary goals for ethical uncertainty reduction. Lastly, this study looked at what verbal communication tactics are used to reduce ethical uncertainty in the workplace, and it was found that individuals used overt questions, indirect questions, third-party inquiry, testing the limits and disguised conversations.
