Thesis (M.A.)--Northeastern Illinois University, 2016.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) exerted tremendous influence on the Classical period (c. 1750 -- c.1830). His lifetime also saw many innovations with the technical development of the fortepiano. These improved response touch which created many new sonic possibilities, "The piano became a proving ground for much of his compositional development." Beethoven composed a large body of piano compositions for solo piano, piano and orchestra, instrumental chamber music with piano, and vocal works with piano. Among his piano works, the thirty-two piano sonatas represent his core composition. The piano sonatas represent Beethoven's creativity at all stages of his professional life, from the earliest beginnings in Bonn as a teenager right up through his final years.

This paper examines Beethoven's earliest set of variations, Dressler's Nine Variations, WoO.63 based on a march by the German composer Gallus Dressler with the third movement of Piano Sonata Op. 109 written 38 years later, variations on the original theme, which is one of his last works. This thesis focused on two aspects: (1) to analyze and compare the variations --- the Dressler Nine Variations WoO.63 and the third movement of Op.109. (2) to highlight challenges in pedagogy and performance.
