Thesis (M.S.C.P.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2016.
This thesis focuses on the topics of death, hope, meaning in life, and near death experiences (NDEs). It explores the idea that grief-stricken persons might be accompanied and comforted in their grief by exposure to both scientific and popular literature having to do with near death experiences. Employing both heuristic and hermeneutic methodologies, the research question of how hope and meaning imbue the psychotherapeutic process is addressed. In addition to reviewing the psychotherapeutic contributions of Kubler-Ross, Jung, and humanistic psychologists, a review is given of seminal work on NDEs by Moody, Ring, Long, and van Lommel. The thesis includes an autobiographical account of some of the author's own experiences of profound grief following the suicide of a dear friend and her subsequent self-healing through bibliotherapy, psychotherapy, and understanding the near death experience and what people worldwide share about their experiences of almost dying.
