Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2016.
This thesis employs hermeneutic methodology to explore vulvodynia and the psychological impact it has on women and on heterosexual relationships. Working from cognitive behavioral, depth psychological, and cultural perspectives, it helps identify the feelings women may experience in managing this disorder and its relationship to gender and sexual identity. In doing so, this thesis describes how archetypal energies in the psyche, such as those depicted in the mythologies of Aphrodite, Eros, and Ares, can be accessed by individuals and couples as inner resources in coping with vulvodynia. It posits the importance of exploring the difference between the erotic and the sexual self, and discusses the problematic impact of cultural sexual norms on women with vulvodynia.
