The act of storytelling, the status of that act, and the credibility assigned to it, have an interesting history. This thesis examines that history, and this examination will show how storytelling adapts to the surrounding changes in both its culture and its function in society. In terms of history, scholars have begun to consider the ways in which the adaptation of storytelling, or its adoption by a particular group, has altered popular and professional communication. Storytelling, however, is an ancient act and the study of particular stories can be traced back centuries. The study of storytelling, not the stories but the function of their telling, is a more recent phenomenon. The act of storytelling has recently regained credence and is currently thriving in various fields of study and within different communities as scholars consider the purpose of telling a story.
