Photography has been a consistently expanding medium since its invention in 1839, however the proliferation of photographic images brought on by the Internet in the digital age, has significantly altered the way photographs are produced, their aesthetic appearance and how they are used within a virtually obsessed society. As photographic technology progresses, devices like the camera phone, allow a public to make an abundance of images that can be instantly uploaded to a universal audience, ultimately creating a public and collective archive. Three contemporary photographers, Penelope Umbrico, Doug Rickard and Michael Max McLeod explore the Internet's function as a mega-archive as well as the photographs new role in cyberspace by employing different practices of producing an image. This thesis will use these three artists' work within the Internet's function as archive, provider of information and platform for communication to explore how these functions influence photographic production, appearance and social use.
