A college education is an economic investment in the American dream. Having a degree provides social and economic advancement in the job market. This paper addresses a gap in the literature regarding accounting graduates and perceived degree quality. Recent studies show most graduates will get their first job with their degree, but do not keep it or advance in the company because they do not have the necessary knowledge, skills, and/or abilities. This study shows the relationship between receiving a college degree with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform in the intended field and how satisfied both employee and employer are with performance. A qualitative case study approach, including a purposive sample of 15 accounting professional currently in their field of work, is presented to show if the education received prepared participants for real world work. Recommendations are given based on the results, including practical assessment, curriculum changes, required internship programs, and degree tracts for accounting majors.
