Encoding Resistance; Graphic Design and Media Control in The Syrian Uprising re-envisioned graphic design as a critical praxis to observe the misinformation and control of media practices in the context of the Syrian uprising. The project used a reflexive design methodology that integrated elements of graphic design and journalism as visual means of resistance against media hegemony. The thesis aimed to form a space whereby graphic design could provide critical commentary on social and political conditions in Syria. Encoding Resistance explored visual and material tactics to communicate fragments of a lived experience through the perspective of the control of public opinion. The visual exploration was an attempt at enacting theory through studio practice to highlight the author's design discipline as one form of citizenship and resistance.
