The purpose of this work is to address black women's experiences in the North Carolina penal system. The work focuses on the history of activism by black women and the activist tradition within the penal system. When these women came together they had the power to make change and their efforts stand as a living testament to the positive results that can be achieved through activism. Moreover, their efforts opened new avenues for additional research. The changes may have been small and to some unnecessary, however each case impacted North Carolina and in some cases North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW). The legacy of black women's activism is evident in each chapter in different forms, but the common thread is to fight the injustices levied on incarcerated black women. Activism continues to be a necessary tool to effect social change within women's correctional institutions.
