Intertribal conflict and Euroamerican colonization created an atmosphere of volatility and uncertainty in New England's Connecticut River Valley during the mid-seventeenth century. Archaeological and historic records indicate both change and continuity for the region's Native communities. This thesis studies the cuprous metal assemblages from the Squakheag fortification at Fort Hill in Hinsdale, New Hampshire and the Pocumtuck Fort in Deerfield, Massachusetts to examine Native American choices during these turbulent times. Located 23 miles apart and occupied by kin-related Algonquian-speaking groups, both communities were attacked in Mohawk raids during the mid-1660s. The Squakheag successfully defended Fort Hill during the ensuing siege, after which they dispersed. Many sought refuge with the Pocumtuck at their fort. Just over a year later, historical sources describe a devastating Mohawk raid on the Pocumtuck Fort. This thesis presents the results of comparative analysis of the cuprous metal collections from these two sites. Both assemblages include cuprous projectile points, beads, kettle pieces, and scrap fragments. Analysis focused on formal and typological attributes of the artifacts to learn about production techniques, style, trade, and information flow. Chaine operatoire is used as a foundation to examine the ways people chose to create, distribute, utilize, and discard objects. I suggest that the trends in technological choices for each assemblage indicate individual and community agency as residents of these sites decided the speed, level, and contexts of accepting, rejecting, or redesigning new materials and technology.
