Thesis (M.A.)--University of California, Irvine, 2013.
This paper seeks to analyze how the Soviet-Afghan War and the Mujahedin were treated by the major American print media outlets. This text seeks to demonstrate that the American print media devoted a substantial amount of coverage to the Soviet-Afghan War and especially to the CIA intervention. The findings presented in this paper are based on a close reading of numerous articles appearing in several major national newspapers and popular magazines from 1979-1989. I argue that the decision to arm the Afghan Mujahedin was controversial and was debated in the press, which challenges claims made by other authors who have studied this time period. The print media's treatment of the Mujahedin changed significantly over time, going from debate about arming the Mujahedin to a consensus around the idea that the rebels were worthy allies, and back to debate near the end. I also argue that the Mujahedin's Islamic fundamentalism was reported on at various times, challenging the idea that Americans did not know that they were arming potentially dangerous people. Historical memory has tended to forget these trends, and this project seeks to help correct this oversight.
