The Ward of the 21st Century (W21C), also known as Unit 36 in the Foothills Hospital of Calgary, Canada, is a prototypical ward and living laboratory for testing a new hospital design and new technologies and medical practices. Hospital buildings are both functional and meaningful, in that they structure the interactions and activities of people within them by ordering space and also reflect the beliefs of their designers. In this study, I use ethnographic methods (participant observation and interviews) to examine the relationship between the new spatial design and technologies of the W21C and beliefs about disease and practice of healthcare workers on the ward. The study begins broadly by looking at general clinical practice, then infection control and communication in particular. An approach informed by the anthropology of space reveals tensions between structure and practice, centralization and decentralization, and conflicting design objectives on the hospital ward of the future.
