Severe mental illness (SMI) typically emerges in late adolescence or young adulthood, often in an unexpected and disturbing way. The onset has been described as a crisis event that profoundly affects the individual and his or her family. Parental caregivers of adult children with SMI face the formidable task of dealing with the vicissitudes of behavioral manifestations, adjusting to a new parental identity, and continuing to care for and cope with their child's chronic condition as they confront their own decline in age and health. The empirical literature revealed these parents experience significant psychological challenges, and their maladaptive emotional responses have been likened to a complex grief reaction. While there is compelling evidence for this negative impact, professional support is scant. The purpose of this dissertation is to create a short-term intervention for a population in dire need of services. The program was designed to fill a gap in the clinical research regarding psychotherapeutic services for parents of adult children with SMI. The program is an adaptation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT; Hayes, 1999), which targets psychological flexibility and valued living. A literature review underscored the distinct needs of this parenting population, existing services, the commonalities underlying effective grief interventions and ACT, and highlighted the flexibility of ACT as a philosophy and model of treatment that easily adapts and responds to the needs of grieving parents. An ACT treatment manual is presented, including a proposed methodology and evaluation of the program, followed by a discussion that addresses future research directions.
