This study examines the conditions for the Japanese preference for gairaigo (Western loanwords) in the presence of equivalent Japanese terms and for the preference for one gairaigo over another designating the same concept.

Forty-eight sets of sample data were collected from eight issues of four Japanese magazines, differing from one another in the gender and age-range of the target audience. A total of 930 different gairaigo that have native equivalents were found and analyzed from three points of view---semantic, formal and socio-cultural.

There were five semantic reasons for a choice of gairaigo despite the existence of a Japanese term for the same concept. These five were: (1) specialization, (2) suitability of gairaigo to a given topic, (3) popular etymology, (4) euphemism, and (5) creation of networks of gairaigo.

Two formal reasons have been suggested for a choice of gairaigo : (1) economy of syllabic or moraic length (Higa 1973), and (2) the avoidance of repetition. Contrary to Higa's claim that when a new gairaigo is introduced beside a Japanese equivalent, the shorter of the two is usually adopted, the results of the present study indicate that moraic length may no longer be one of the key elements in the choice of a gairaigo over the Japanese equivalent.

There were four interacting socio-cultural reasons for a choice of gairaigo: (1) They created an elevated level of speech or writing by adding a sense of prestige or glamour, thus rendering the discourse both cosmopolitan and fashionable. (2) They were manifestly undecipherable or unfamiliar, yet had a seemingly magical effect because such gairaigo conveyed to the Japanese the feeling of being intellectual, a member of a special group, in touch with new ideas from foreign countries. (3) They were refreshing for the Japanese who were bored with the words repeatedly used by the media. (4) They described traditional foods or objects so as to make reading audiences reevaluate them in a modern light.

The data showed that many new gairaigo have been created recently and have replaced old ones. Particularly in the field of fashion French-derived and English-derived gairaigo have been competing with each other.
