Thesis (M.S.)--Southeastern Louisiana University, 2012.
This qualitative research focuses on the local food movement present throughout the suburban Northshore region of the city of New Orleans, Louisiana and how it impacts the local community. In-depth, open-ended interview questions were asked to eleven Northshore community members involved with the local food movement. The purpose of the interviews was to evaluate the importance individuals place on eating locally. Interview questions focused on opinions concerning social cohesion, culture, perceptions of the word "local", shared identities, social equality, and community building. The data generated throughout these interviews was then analyzed to evaluate the perceived importance of the local food movement. It is suggested through the data that Northshore community members place a high level of importance on where their food comes from, with much emphasis being placed on building a sense of community or culture throughout the region.
