Thesis (Ph.D.)--California Institute of Integral Studies, 2014.
The subject of psychotherapy and indigenous healing practices is considered broadly from three perspectives: (a) culture-embedded indigenous healing practices, (b) multiculturalism and psychotherapy, and (c) cultural universalism and cultural relativism. Attachment theory is used as a Western psychotherapeutic example and rootedness theory is defined as an African cultural approach to therapy. Both theories are compared with respect to their basic orientations, techniques, and mechanisms of therapy. A culturally relevant assessment model, 5-factor Rootedness Assessment Model, is suggested. Two clinical case studies, one published by Linde in 2002 and one by Nzewi in 2009, are described to test the effectiveness of the new assessment model. The results of the evaluation demonstrated the relevance of cultural worldview, values, and belief systems in a therapeutic relationship and the effectiveness of the new clinical model as a framework for understanding how shared worldviews facilitate the healing process.
