Thesis (Ph.D.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013.

The research contains two parts: (1) a literature research on forgiveness, especially the meaning and issues of biblical forgiveness as well as the psychological studies on forgiveness, and (2) an empirical study to examine whether people in a combined state of understanding biblical forgiveness and receiving forgiveness will have a higher tendency to grant interpersonal forgiveness than people in states that lack either understanding or experiences of forgiveness. The researcher constructed two inventories, the first which measured one's understanding of the concept of biblical forgiveness and a second inventory which measured one's experience of receiving forgiveness. The criterion measure of these two new inventories was the Enright Forgiveness Inventory (Taiwanese Version). The process of constructing these two bilingual questionnaires included the following elements: item pools, evaluation by a panel of experts, back-translation, pilot study, selection and revision of items, and formal study. The results confirmed most of the research hypotheses; however, the religious discrepancy between understanding, experiencing, and actual granting of forgiveness warrants further examination.
