Creativity is engendered through the aesthetic experience fostered in the educational and ritual practices of the Christian congregation and carries within it the possibility of the transformation of Christian life. To understand this process one must examine the theological, psychological, aesthetic and educational processes that are in dialogue with the process of creative transformation.

Beginning with the Enlightenment, the primacy of cognitive dominance has contributed to a lack of emotional engagement to the stories of our faith. Although the scriptural stories form the critical foundation and unifying factor of Christian life, they are, all too often, not a part of the framework of most believers. Teaching the sacred story requires not only the cognitive emphasis upon the story's contents but must provide experiences that prompt emotional engagement with it. This allows the story to become embodied in the believer's thoughts and actions. Congregations must be taught how to encounter God in the sacred text for in this encounter the creative process is ignited.

Through this work the Church is called to respond to new understandings brought about by advances in psychology and cognitive neuroscience in order to provide experiences in worship and education that intentionally nurture the affective as well as the cognitive. This approach must be expressed in the biblical and theological context of the post-modern Church. It fosters the possibility for a renewed sense of spirituality and serves as a catalyst for God's work in the world.

This work offers an avenue for the recovery of creativity in the practice of Christian education by illustrating the process of sacred imagining and forming a way to empower people to bring about God's vision for the world. It provides a method to engage the Scripture cognitively, affectively and somatically, in order to facilitate creative transformation.
