Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Rochester, 2013.
Among Gyorgi Ligeti's contributions to vocal composition and repertoire are his expansion of the range of vocal expression and his "emancipation" of the voice from its relationship to the text. This dissertation traces these innovations in selected works---including Aventures (1962), Nouvelles Aventures (1965), and Mysteries of the Macabre (1992) (arranged by Elgar Howarth), which showcases selected arias sung by the character Gepopo from Ligeti's opera Le Grande Macabre (1974--77, revised 1996). In all these works, Ligeti opted for texts in invented languages that are imbued with an emotional mimicry that is projected through vocal "theater." We see "texts" comprising phonemes, imaginary words, and other types of utterances on single consonants or vowels in addition to instructions indicated in the score as to what types of sounds Ligeti wants such as "laughter", and "stage whisper.".

This dissertation adapts methodology from Bauer (2011) to create analytical tables for each of the three works studied; these tables are used to propose narratives for each work which may be used to develop a compelling performance.
