An increasingly obvious trend in contemporary photography is the emergence of the large scale print. As it grows in popularity, the large scale photographic print is interesting and important to consider within the context of art history as well as the art market. What is driving this trend? Has it primarily stemmed from artistic practice? How have technological innovations made printing larger photographs easier and more accessible? Do large scale photographs command attention in ways that a smaller photograph could not? This paper seeks to explore the artistic reasons for large scale photography, while also considering various practical concerns that contemporary photography regularly encounters, such as technological options and concerns regarding conservation. Through an overview of each factor, we seek to gain a better understanding of why photographers might increasingly be choosing to print large scale, and how these decisions fit into today's contemporary photography landscape.
