Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014.
Art museums have become more complex organizations and are now embodying different roles to multiple publics. In an attempt to distinguish themselves from each other and to strengthen financial support, museums are creating programs and events to build their community relationships and validate their organization through educational programs. Within the larger body of art museums is a smaller, but growing group of named collections. These private-turned-public collections bear the name of their founder or a significant and generous donor. The naming of an art museum can have both advantageous and unfavorable effects. This thesis investigates how the name of an art museum can affect funding and development operations, and what approaches `named' collections are undertaking to manage such effects.
