This paper explores the history of art auctions and different techniques that auction houses have developed over time in order to remain profitable and support the functioning of the art market. The most recent policy that auction houses embraced is the guarantee system, which can be perceived as a type of insurance for sellers. The paper reviews how the auction market compares to the financial market to identify the similarities and differences. Both markets use auctions as a method of sale, yet, are trading the goods very different in nature. While insurance might be requested by sellers in different kinds of markets, its application in the art market is unique due to the inherent qualities of art objects. This thesis examines relationships between auction market participants and analyzes possible complications around third-party guarantees, along with their impact on the mechanics of the auction, the art market and price formation.
