Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014.
Insofar as "discontinuities"--changes in the way business is conducted, a term coined by Richard Foster--are inevitable, it may be that the art market is indeed exhibiting symptoms that change is underway. Clayton Christensen's disruptive innovation theory illuminates the possibility that the art world may be producing products and services that are actually too sophisticated, too expensive, and too complicated for a category of its customers and potential customers at the low end of the market. Nonconsumers create an opportunity for a disruptive innovation: a common online platform. This paper explores the potential for a common online platform for the art market as a low-end, less sophisticated, less complicated means of discovering and purchasing artworks. Based on an application of the disruptive innovation framework, Artsy is the frontrunner to provide such a platform, as they are best positioned to relieve the constraints hindering the nonconsumers.
