Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014.
Cases of art vandalism have been occurring with more frequency than ever before seen in previous years. The literature written about art vandalism is sparse, mainly because when a work of art is vandalized, museums will desperately try to hide the event from the media for fear that others will be inspired to follow in the attackers foot steps. The public has become well aware of the high monetary value of artworks, which may add to the shock and awe that is expressed when a story is published about someone scrawling a few lines of self-promotional nonsense on a painting by Mark Rothko. When an artwork enters a museum, its worth extends far beyond monetary value. Through a series of case studies, this thesis will explore the ways in which vandalism affects the value of an artwork that will never again re-enter the market.
