Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014.
Today's curator is presented with an unprecedented opportunity to step into a professional realm little explored--the commercial art world. As the world's reigning art galleries have continued to expand their reach across the globe, commercial gallery exhibitions have become extraordinary visual displays rivaling those of museums. With no ropes separating the visitor from the works on view, absence of an admission fee, and minimal security presence, top-tier commercial galleries have increasingly organized museum-quality exhibitions in scope, scale, and quality. At the center of many of these exhibitions is a previously shadowed curatorial figurehead--a position traditionally associated with museums and non-profit institutions. While existing literature often addresses the rising trend of museum-quality commercial gallery exhibitions, it does not investigate the role of the curator in the exhibition process. This paper seeks to explore the role of curators in commercial galleries and resulting visual displays created as a result of their involvement. Three top-tier commercial galleries offer case studies of illustrative exhibition programs and shed light on the rising phenomenon of the curated commercial gallery exhibition.
