Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014.
This thesis examines the impact of private collections being shown publically. Novel practices established by the modern collector - opening up private homes, establishing exhibitions and otherwise creating their own public venues and institutions - has fundamentally changed the art landscape, and will have long-standing effects on the art market as a whole. This paper is a study of this phenomenon, as well as an examination of its impact on artist's careers, art pricing, museums, and other public institutions. Economic, legal, tax and estate considerations are studied, in addition to issues regarding donations to public institutions, in order to provide context for the modern collecting environment. A review of historical collections and the sociology of collecting are supported with case studies of current collections in this arena. Finally, areas of additional study, including quantitative research on the correlation between public access to private collections and subsequent values, are discussed.
