The following paper argues that the Eucharistic theologies of the Church Father Augustine of Hippo and the medieval scholar Thomas Aquinas were different in fundamental ways. It has been implied that because both of these Doctors of the Church held to Christ's real presence in the Sacrament, they had the same Eucharistic doctrine; however, this belief represents a misunderstanding of one or both men. Augustine's view of Christ's mystic-presence and Aquinas's orthodox Catholic position of transubstantiation are in pronounced conflict with one another. Therefore, within the following analysis it is asserted that the Roman Catholic Church cannot unilaterally claim, either implicitly or explicitly, the unqualified authority of both men in support of the Church's Eucharistic theology. The focus of the paper is not the theology of the Catholic Church, rather the focus is the analysis of the Doctors' differences as demonstrated through various comparisons of their theological and philosophical views of the Eucharist. It begins with an inquiry into the relationship between faith and reason, noting the difference in their philosophical systems. This is followed by an inquiry into the theological and philosophical metaphysics of both theologians' systems; Augustine's mystic Neoplatonist and Aquinas's Aristotelian view of reality yield quite different Eucharist doctrines. The third section centers on the aspect of grace within the Sacrament. There is significant overlap between the ecclesiology of the two men, but just as it is seen in the other sections, the fundamental differences still separate the two. The paper closes with a final section presenting the development of the Memorialist view of the Eucharist and the Doctors' interaction with it as a dissenting view. While providing the exegetical basis for Memorialism, the nuanced differences between Augustine and Thomas Aquinas are illustrated by their reaction to the Memorialistic "heresies" during their own lives.
