Thesis (M.S.)--Pepperdine University, 2014.
Assuring quality leadership within organizations is a critical imperative for assuring firms meet their objectives. Although various factors are identified as contributing to leader effectiveness, self-awareness may be a central competency. This mixed-method study examined the use and development of self-awareness among organizational leaders as it related to their leadership effectiveness. Fourteen effective leaders who were nominated by peers, subordinates, or managers completed a self-awareness assessment and participated in a 1-hour focus group discussion. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the survey and content analysis used to review the focus group data. Findings indicated that the leaders possessed self-awareness; however, newer leaders admitted they were unfamiliar with the term. Although self-awareness will not warranty successful leadership, its presence was considered central for success. The findings suggested self-awareness is developed through activities practiced within and outside the professional setting. Reported outcomes of self-awareness include increased self-confidence and improved sense of presence. More education and research are needed regarding self-awareness to enhance its development among leaders.
