This research proposes a mixed integer programming (MIP) model and metaheuristic approach for minimizing the total cost of scheduling patients in an outpatient clinic. A hybrid appointment system (HAS) consisting of walk-ins, open access, and pre-book, is developed to minimize the physician's idle time, overtime, and the number of patients not receiving an appointment. A MIP model is initially developed to schedule the patients. Due to large number of binary variable the MIP model becomes complex. Hence, Genetic Algorithm, a metaheuristic approach, is designed to schedule the patient for a HAS. The HAS is analyzed using different cost settings to understand the impact of each cost namely opportunity cost, overtime cost and idle time cost of physician's. The results indicate that the schedule varies depending upon the cost settings, and the model serves as a decision support system for outpatient clinics.
