Thesis (M.S.)--Villanova University, 2014.
Although the intensity of competition is likely to decrease among relatives, two radically different outcomes are possible: kin share resources fairly equally or, as predicted by skew theory, increased relatedness leads to increased skew. Larval Utetheisa ornatrix actively compete for access into seedpods of their host plant and successful competitors reap numerous benefits. In one-on-one trials for access into artificial seedpods, I monitored occupancy and weight change of larvae varying in size, sex, and relatedness. Larger larvae won control over seedpods more often and gained more weight relative to smaller larvae. When size-matched, resident larvae maintained control over seedpods more often when paired with siblings than unrelated larvae. This study demonstrated that large U. ornatrix larvae have a competitive advantage over smaller larvae, which further justifies adult females' preference for large males, and that larvae adhere to skew theory as resources are more evenly distributed between unrelated larvae than siblings.
