Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2014.
The purpose of this systematic review of the literature is to explore the adjustment of adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) and the problems that emerge from growing up with an alcoholic parent. This analysis helps to understand the maladjustment of ACOAs and compose a set of risk and protective factors along with filling in gaps in the literature about the problem. This study analyzed extant literature, including 25 empirical studies, using qualitative and content analysis methods to examine the findings of empirical research articles on the adjustment of A CO As. The studies used for this analysis have been published within the past 25 years in professional journals of social work, psychology, sociology, child and adolescent and other related fields. Understanding the effects of this phenomenon will help to better address children's adjustment into adulthood, while reducing future harm.
