Raised in and around the Beacon of Holy Life, the 22 year-old narrator, known only as Child or Johnny Wright's wife, lives by the Brooklyn church's two distinct principles: truth and life. She attempts to follow all the rules of being a woman in this congregation and tries, as she is expected to by society, to become a mother---woman's one real redeeming trait in the eyes of their male superiors. But after two, nearly three, years of marriage and still no child, she's months from being excommunicated from this safe haven and thrown out into a hostile 1976 New York City. Heavy Cross: Part I is the beginnings of an exploration concerning women's traditional identities, how these inferior roles are constructed by men but also out of the fears of other women, and how these rules and supposed truths are challenged by modern day women particularly during the abortion era.
