Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2012.
This study examines the brief career of Katharine B. Mott, who built speculative houses of exceptional quality and charm in the booming Houston market of the late 1920s. She began her career in Indianapolis in 1925, and moved with her family to Houston in late 1927. Not having trained as an architect herself, Mrs. Mott had the foresight to hire trained architects to assist her with her projects, engaging first the Indianapolis firm of Pierre and Wright, and later, for her Houston projects, Burns and James Architects, also of Indianapolis. The paper looks at Katharine Mott's roles as client, designer, and businesswoman. Her story is important because, as the architectural character of American cities has been largely defined by speculative building, Katharine Mott demonstrated that one can profitably build speculative houses with architectural integrity that will endure the decades, and continue to contribute positively the fabric of the community.
