In the field of information technology, a mobile revolution is presently underway, changing how organizations mitigate threats to digital information. Currently, little research has been completed to help IT administrators form security policy programs for mobile devices. The purpose of this research is to bridge this gap by providing organizations with a mobile device security policy framework. However, the term mobile device is ever broadening. Therefore, the research was limited in scope; specifically, to the largest trending devices in organizations: smartphones and tablets. The framework was constructed from analysis of current academic literature. This analysis was accomplished in two parts. First, an examination of the current environment in which mobile devices exists within organizations. A key theme identified from this analysis was that mobile devices are highly personal. Second, the results of this analysis were applied to traditional IT security policy research. The results are a mobile device security policy framework that organizations can use as a guideline in the development, implementation, monitoring/enforcement, and evaluation of mobile device security policy programs.
