The purpose of this qualitative, hermeneutic phenomenological study was to investigate and describe the effectiveness of associate degree nursing (ADN) programs in preparing new graduates for a successful transition from nursing students to graduate nurses practicing in critical care settings. The theoretical framework used for this study was Patricia Benner's novice-to-expert theory. Benner described five levels of development that nurses experience while maturing into registered nurses. The design used for this study was hermeneutic phenomenology, and the hermeneutic circle guided the analytical process. The participants were all hired directly into critical care settings as first job assignments directly after graduation. Participants shared their turbulent lived experiences as new graduates practicing in critical care settings. The results of this study supported Benner's theory and demonstrated that although the participants' ADN programs prepared them for the role of registered nurse in medical surgical settings, they were not prepared for the high-acuity patients who require advanced nursing skills, critical thinking abilities, and comprehensive decision making.
