Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Albany, 2000.
This study examined the relationship between ethnic identity, acculturation, and the perception of career barriers, specifically racial discrimination and decision-making difficulties. The data from a sample of 97 ethnic minority college students were analyzed through two multiple regressions. Findings, when considered as a whole, supported the overall hypothesis. However, when individual hypotheses were examined, only one of these constructs was supported as a factor in the perception of career barriers. Ethnic identity was significantly related to individuals' perceptions of both decision-making difficulties and racial discrimination as career barriers. However, the direction of the relationship with the perception of decision-making difficulties as a career barrier was opposite to that predicted; that is, the higher the individual's endorsement of an ethnic identity, the higher the perception of decision-making difficulties. Acculturation was not uniquely predictive of the perception of either career barrier.
