The present study examined acculturation and Chicana/o college students' willingness to seek counseling. The variables of shame and willingness to seek alternative resources were examined as mediators. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses, which predicted various direct and indirect effects of acculturation, shame, and alternative resources on participants' willingness to seek counseling. In addition to the SEM, participants ranked various alternative resources that they would use if experiencing personal problems.

520 $a Two hundred and four Chicana/o college students from a university and community college in the Pacific Northwest completed a questionnaire booklet that included a demographic form, a measure of acculturation and enculturation, a shame/stigma measure, an alternative resources measure, and a measure of willingness to see a psychological counselor.
520 $a Both Anglo-orientation and Mexican-orientation had indirect effects on willingness to seek counseling, through their effects on the two mediating variables, shame and willingness to use alternative resources. Participants ranked their willingness to use alternative resources found in the college context (e.g., friend in college, professor, student services professional, and multicultural center staff) lower than relatives, family friends, and clergy, but higher than community social services and folk healers, such as curanderas/os.
520 $a Not all of the findings confirmed the theory. Both Anglo-orientation (acculturation) and Mexican-orientation (enculturation) were negatively associated with shame in seeking counseling, which, in turn predicted less willingness to seek counseling. Also, contrary to expectations, both Anglo-orientation and Mexican-orientation were positively associated with willingness to use alternative resources, which, in turn, was positively, not negatively, associated with willingness to seek counseling.
520 $a The present study was one of the few studies to examine indirect or mediating effects between acculturation and willingness to seek counseling empirically, and to do so with Chicana/o college students. Key unexpected findings included the following: (a) Mexican-orientation was not positively associated with shame in seeking counseling; (b) Anglo orientation was positively associated with a willingness to seek alternative resources, and (c) the willingness to seek alternative resources and to seek counseling were not incompatible or mutually exclusive. Theory on the underutilization of counseling by Chicanas/os may need to be revised.
