Thesis (M.A.)--Kean University, 2013.
The study of religion and its relationship to individuals' happiness and life satisfaction has become of interest in the field of psychology. The impact of it on such cognitive aspects, however, is still not completely understood. The present research attempted to examine if high levels of religiosity/spirituality led to higher levels of happiness and of life satisfaction. A correlational study was conducted among 59 adults, who were recruited through Facebook and Facebook fan pages. The subjects completed a survey that consisted of 31 items, which included 6 demographic questions, including religious affiliation. 3 different scales were used to measure the variables. Religion/spirituality was operationally defined via the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (Underwood, 2011), life satisfaction was measured with the use of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin, 1985), and happiness was measured with the use of the Subjective Happiness Scale (Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999). The study found no significance in the relationship between religion/spirituality and life satisfaction. No significance was either found between religiosity/spirituality and happiness. A post-hoc finding suggested that people who scored higher in terms of happiness also scored higher in terms of life satisfaction. The limitations to the study were discussed and suggestions for future research that could yield to different results were made.
