Depression is a common debilitating illness, and the vast majority of patients will seek treatment through primary care. This study explored the impact of integrated behavioral health on depression severity, depression score changes, and health care utilization. Secondary data analyses were conducted on a sample of 150 patients who had received treatment for depression from 2003-2012 at a primary care clinic in the western United States. The inclusion criteria were that patients were on an SSRI medication and in the clinic's depression registry. Individuals receiving integrated behavioral health (N = 75) were compared with those being treated with SSRI medication alone (N = 75). Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ), a reliable instrument studied for use in primary care. The correlation between the number of integrated behavioral health visits and depression severity scores was also explored. Patients receiving integrative behavioral health evidenced statistically significant reductions in depression scores (p < .001) at 45% compared to 26% in the control group. In the treatment group, 56% of patients experienced a 50% or greater reduction in PHQ scores compared to 38% in the control group. Contrary to what was hypothesized, patients receiving integrated behavioral health had more (7.5) medical visits per year compared to controls (5.0). In terms of social change implications, the findings provide additional empirical support for the integration of behavioral health into primary care and suggest that such integrated care may serve to improve clinical outcomes in patients being treated for depression in these settings.
