This multiple case study explored the relationship between workplace romance and the negative outcomes of sexual relationships between employees in the workplace from the perspective of Human Resource Management (HRM). In addition, the study examined the establishment of rules and policies set by HRM to minimize negative consequences that may stem from workplace romantic relationships. Sexual relationships between employees in the workplace can influence many work-related factors, such as work productivity, workplace morale, employee motivation, and job satisfaction. Romance in the workplace may also ultimately lead to (a) gossip, (b) jealousy, (c) retaliation, (d) power struggles, and (e) other negative behaviors causing great damage to employee's morale and even generating sexual harassment charges. The research methodology consisted of a qualitative study, using multiple-case study methodology based on new research utilizing an online questionnaire addressed to HRM key staff, directors, or managers within the business. Purposive sampling identified participants who would complete a structured, open-ended questionnaire. The researcher collected textual data from the online questionnaire and archival documents, organized it according to an initial set of codes, and entered it into an NVivo database for analysis. During this process, 10 themes emerged through an exploration of the data: (a) sexual harassment, (b) morale, (c) positive effect, (d) establishment of policy to discourage relationship, (e) imbalance of power, (f) involuntary termination (g) motivation; (h) job satisfaction; (i) power struggle, and (j) retaliation. Recommendations resulting from this study include: (a) further research and analysis of the relationship between workplace romance and the negative outcomes of sexual relationships between employees in the workplace, (b) development of a mitigation process that includes the establishment of employment policies and employee educational programs aimed at preventing future problems; and (c) behavior modification that will enable HRM to mitigate negative outcomes arising from the formation of sexual relationships in the workplace. Additionally, the results of this study expand the existing body of literature and knowledge by providing information on the dynamics of sexual relationships in the workplace and its impact on the organization from the perspective of HRM.
