Thesis (D.H.A.)--Medical University of South Carolina, 2013.
Treatment of musculoskeletal disorders is one of the leading causes of rising costs to the healthcare industry, indicating the need for study into lower cost treatment strategies. Previous study into the use of home exercise programs for treating musculoskeletal conditions is somewhat limited in nature, and use of Internet-based programs is virtually non-existent. The purpose of this study is to develop further research on use of Internet-based home exercise programs, or e-rehabilitation, as part of treatment plans for non-complicated common musculoskeletal disorders. This study provides a retrospective review of individual cases and a preliminary analysis of an existing multi-center randomized controlled trial on the use of Internet-based home exercise programs. Using data from self-reported symptomatic and functional outcomes, physician evaluations, and participation as well as satisfaction in the treatment plans, five individual patient cases were analyzed separately and collectively reviewed. This study found that four of the five cases studied presented favorable outcomes with use of the web-based home exercise program.
