Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fielding Graduate University, 2013.
It is important to engage in regular exercise in order to maintain a physically and psychologically healthy lifestyle; however, a large portion of the population is insufficiently active. Understanding how different types of motivation contribute to exercise behavior is an important first step in identifying ways to increase exercise among individuals. The primary purposes of this current study were to test the relationships between age, gender, ethnicity, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and motivation to exercise. Personal investment theory and social-cognitive theory was the framework from which to examine how individual characteristics contribute to motivation to exercise. The findings are relevant for planning activities intended to encourage adults to engage in more exercise.
