Scholars who have been studying young people's environments suggest that cultivating people's attachment to places is essential for healthy development of children. However, there is a lack of empirically based information regarding young children's (ages 9-11) attachment to public spaces in any context, either western or non-western. Furthermore, a review of the existing place attachment studies show that the role of place-making experiences on people's attachment to place has not received enough attention. Thus, urban planners and designers do not yet know whether and to what extent individuals' involvement in urban planning and design processes affect their attachment to places.

520 $a This study proposes a framework for understanding and measuring individual's place attachment in order to examine whether and to what extent 9-11 year-old children's involvement in urban planning and design activities affect their attachment to public spaces. The fieldwork for the empirical study took place in six low-income historic neighborhoods of the City of Istanbul, Turkey. Since the 1990s, all of the chosen neighborhoods have been transforming socially and spatially due to large-scale urban regeneration practices of the local municipalities. Unfortunately, despite the rights given to Turkish children with the ratification of CRC in 1995, children still have little or no say in these developments. Little is known about what children of Istanbul think about their changing environments and how they perceive and use their public spaces. Research findings were collected by involving local children (n=240) and local youth (n=5) in urban planning and design activities by following a participatory action research approach. Activities included participatory photography, keeping an activity diary, GPS tracking, place observation, mapping, focus groups, design-build and neighborhood planning workshops, and cultural trips, community events and conferences. Children's place attachment and associated variables such as place knowledge and social efficacy were measured before and after the study by pre- and-post study surveys to assess the impact of their involvement in planning and design activities. As part of the action research, youth were trained to continue project activities beyond the duration of the project.
520 $a Survey data was analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) procedures and content and discourse analysis. Clusters were defined by an a priori selection, cluster analysis and factor analysis. Survey results were correlated with the findings from other research methods.
520 $a Results show that as children participated in more place-making activities, their feelings for and knowledge about their living environments significantly increased at the block and neighborhood level. Individual and socio-cultural factors, attributes of the places where they live, the number of activities they attended, and the type and quality of these activities affected children's engagement, and hence their place attachment, place learning, and motivation for place care. In all cases, children indicated their appreciation for social, historical, natural, diverse, safe, healthy, comfortable, fun and visually appealing settings. However, the level of urban regeneration and gentrification in children's communities affected their place preferences, attributes of these places, and the activities performed at each setting. Findings inform planners and designers about the design and planning of child-friendly environments in historic settlements that are candidates for redevelopment and regeneration practices.
