Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014.
This paper will build upon the definition of taste as presented by Pierre Bourdieu's "Distinction of Taste" and its trajectory within determining the market for decorative arts. Expanding upon the philosophical definition, this thesis seeks to establish a working comparison between style and taste, the institutions that facilitate taste, and the professional authority on its formation. Analytical studies focusing on specific tastemakers, in depth research about iconic institutions' facilitation of redefining taste, and a focus on current collectors of decorative arts will form the content of this paper. Utilizing further research into the areas of taste, taste making, and tastemakers, this paper will ultimately conclude with commentary on high and low taste as they are currently applied to the fine and decorative arts and how this is subject to change in the future technologically advancing market.
