Many students at the community college do not talk about their career plans with a career counselor. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of community college students to understand why they do not engage in career planning. Guided by the chaos theory of work, which focuses on the need to be flexible and resilient in the current climate of change and complexity, a case study research design was employed with a purposeful typical case sampling. The guiding research question was developed to identify underlying factors and experiences that resulted in a lack of student engagement with the career counseling process on campus. Data were collected through 2 focus groups and individual interviews with 2 administrators. These data were analyzed using thematic and typological analyses to code the raw data and look for themes across codes. According to study findings, students were not fully aware of the services offered by the community college's counseling division. Three themes emerged from administrators: awareness, disconnectedness, opportunities, and 3 themes emerged from the student participants: connectedness/relationships, personal meaning, and transitions. Using these findings, a 9-module curriculum plan was created based on 6 of the major themes in the findings. This project will give students seeking career planning with guidance that is in aligned with the economy and workplace environment. As a result, these community college students will be better prepared to encounter unexpected changes and complexities in life and the world of work. Additionally, students will have opportunities to affect social change as leaders, change agents, and role models in their field as they transition from college to the workplace.
