The word conflict conjures up a variety of images. Some people may think of it as something to avoid while others look at it as an opportunity for growth. Unresolved and lingering conflict in a school can affect productivity, school environment, and ultimately achievement scores. It is the administrator's job to resolve or mediate conflicts as they develop. How administrators mediate and lead the district may define the success of the school district.

This quantitative research project examined and compared the perceptions of Nebraska principals and school board presidents regarding their perceived preferred conflict management styles as well as their actual preferred conflict management style as measured by the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument. The study also examined the sources of conflict that face principals and school board presidents including the societal issue and the personnel involved. The study analyzed the principals' and school board presidents' perceptions based on demographic characteristics of age, gender, and years of experience. Further, the study compared the conflict resolution styles of school board presidents and principals with superintendents from DeTurk's (2010) study.

The results of this study suggested that principals and school board presidents do not see one particular group of school personnel or social issue as the catalyst for conflict. Further, there were few significant differences when disaggregated out by gender, age, and years of experience. However, it is interesting to note that principals' and school board presidents' perceived conflict management style differed from their actual conflict management style. Principals and school board presidents reported preferring avoidance when handling conflict. However, the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument showed that their actual preferred style was collaboration and their least was avoidance.
