THE PROBLEM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of after-school intervention programs in improving student performance on the sixth- and seventh-grade STAR Test and to examine the impact and efficacy of parent involvement in relation to student academic performance in school.

520 $a THE PROBLEM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of after-school intervention programs in improving student performance on the sixth- and seventh-grade STAR Test and to examine the impact and efficacy of parent involvement in relation to student academic performance in school.
520 $a METHOD: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with an enrollment of 205 sixth-grade students, 201 seventh-grade students, and 180 eighth-grade students at a middle school to determine the effectiveness of intervention programs and parent involvement based on student score growth on California Standards Test also referred to as the STAR Test.
520 $a RESULTS: Parent participation did not demonstrate comparative growth when student performance was observed during 2009-2010, but other research shows the importance parent involvement. Tutoring proved to be effective and demonstrated academic growth for students during 2009-2010 on their California State Test on English Language Arts. Clearly, tutoring does have an effect on the academic growth of students.
