Thesis (M.A.T.)--Corcoran College of Art + Design, 2014.
People diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have not been acclimated into typical society due to the lack of inclusion with non-ASD classmates in the educational environment of schools and colleges. Through innovative and effective school design utilizing proven beneficial design aspects for autistic students, the educational environment can become more conducive for students with ASD and non-ASD students as well. Altering the general structure of the classroom in combination with strategic teaching methodology facilitated through design ASD and non-ASD students will be provided a more stable and healthy learning environment. Therefore, it is important to design classrooms in which inclusion is a major factor in the success of the student's learning goals. Thus this paper focuses on the importance of interior design of classrooms and how design can invoke feelings of comfort and foster an environment of learning, which is important to autistic children who have a difficult time processing their often times chaotic environment.
